Dare to Reach Every Achievable Moment
The DREAM Project is a compilation CD with songs of different genres donated by musicians and artists who have all donated their time to help the University of West Florida’s Chapter of Active Minds (formerly Students for Suicide Awareness or SSA) in loving memory of Tyler Knisely, a UWF student who lost his battle with depression and took his life fall semester 2008 and Jr. Villanueva, a UF student who also lost his battle and took his life spring semester 1997.The DREAM Project

THEATER DELTA

Region 1 wanted to share info about Theater Delta, a performing troupe from North Carolina that uses Interactive Theater – scripted and improvisational audience participatory theater – to promote dialogue and social change in communities around the globe. They performed at the University of West Florida during Suicide Prevention Week to address depression and suicide ideation, sexual identity and orientation and the stressors of coming out, and more.

UWF’s Suicide Outreach and Support, Students for Suicide Awareness, and Gay Straight Alliance hosted the event for Theater Delta’s Down in the Dumps, at the UWF Conference Center. The performance addressed the warning signs of suicide, depression, the struggles of coming out as LGBTQ identified,  and how to help a friend who may be considering suicide. The event was free to students and pizza was provided along with information tables. About 100 students, faculty, and others were in attendance.

I was truly moved by this performance, how the actors stayed in character, how the director engaged the audience and got the dialogue going, so much to the point that when I had the opportunity to participate and speak out, I got so choked up after witnessing so many students in the room openly express their current and past experiences with depression that I knew I would break down just thinking about my brother and what he went through. It made me realize the goal of starting SSA on campus in my brother’s memory was to bring about events such as this to help students – if that were available 16 years ago, would things be different. I am proud of SSA for bringing this to campus.

Just wanted to share in case anyone across the state was interested in contacting them. If you would like more info, visit www.theaterdelta.com or contact Ben Saypol, Artistic Director at 919-229-1223 or [email protected]

For more information on the Theater Delta performance at UWF, see the following link for the article printed in the student newspaper, The Voyager.http://www.thevoyager.net/2013/09/dumps-raises-awareness-lgbt-issues/

What’s happening in Tampa Bay Suicide Prevention….
                                        A Tribute to Matthew Cook

On February 12, 2014 we lost a member of PEMHS family. Since 11/5/2001, Matthew Cook has touched the lives of so many PEMHS consumers. Matthew started with PEMHS as a counselor for Families First. He worked in an array of programs including BNet and Children’s Crisis. He ultimately became a therapist for our Adult CSUs in 2007 where his passion lied.

Matthew demonstrated incomparable passion for those that he served. In fact, he would selflessly assist with other programs and provide innovative ideas on expanding client services. In 2009, Matthew implemented HALOS suicide bereavement support groups on PEMHS campus. This group continues to meet bi-weekly and offers emotional support and validation for Pinellas County residents grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide.

In 2013, Matthew was instrumental in the collaboration of PEMHS and Pinellas Hope, so that Substance Abuse Crisis Intervention Services could be available Monday through Friday to Pinellas Hope residents trying to maintain sobriety during financial hardships.

Matthew recently found his true passion which involved educating future counseling professionals. He established relationships with neighboring universities and actively recruited and supervised Masters seeking counseling interns, many of which obtained employment with our agency.

Matthew also cared deeply for his coworkers. He would not hesitate to approach supervisors and provide feedback on ways to improve efficiency  of procedures in the hopes of preserving the sanity of his co-workers. As frustrating as his persistence could be to some, he was almost always right.  After recovering from his triple bypass surgery 7 months ago, he began taking steps to improve his overall health and decrease stress. He was also the happiest I remember seeing him at PEMHS.

His unexpected death from a tragic car accident left our PEMHS Family shocked and saddened. Matthew’s shoes will never be filled. But the impact he left on this agency and the lives that he changed will never be forgotten.

In special remembrance for the amazing services and time Matthew committed to helping clients with co-occurring disorders; several Board members of The Florida School of Addictions Studies established a Memorial Scholarship in his name to honor him at the Oct. Annual School in Tampa.  The scholarship will pay the tuition for a PEMHS employee to attend the School.  Matthew’s legacy will live with PEMHS forever.

National Suicide Prevention Week:  Sept 8 – 14, 2013 [1 Attachment]

Following is information about an event hosted by St. Petersburg College.  It addresses a specific risk group, please spread the word about this training.

SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING FOR FIRE SERVICE PERSONNEL

National Suicide Prevention Week is September 8 – 14 with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.  In conjunction with many other events to commemorate the week, the Center for Public Safety at St. Petersburg College will be sponsoring a unique training for fire and emergency personnel.  This day-long event is designed to raise awareness and develop suicide prevention strategies within the fire service.

According to the American Association of Suicidology  (http://www.suicidology.org/home) and the Center for Disease Control, 38,364 people died by suicide in our country in 2010 (the most recent national data available).  The greatest number of deaths occurred between the ages of 45 and 65.  Four times as many men died by suicide compared to females.  In Florida, suicide ranks as the 8th leading cause of death with 2,922 suicide deaths in 2012.  Pinellas County ranks fourth in the state of Florida for suicide deaths.

While there are no government statistics on suicide death within the fire and emergency medical services, the demographics of the workforce match the risk category presented through national data.  In addition, researchers such as the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (http://www.ffbha.org) indicate that 35 firefighters died by suicide in 2011.  Risk factors for depression and suicide are present in the nature of the work and are complicated by erratic work schedules, sleep deprivation, and relationship issues.

This training opportunity will provide participants the tools to manage the risk factors, decode communication that might indicate a call for help, identify signs of depression and suicide, develop a plan for intervention and referral, and build protective factors.

Monday, September 9; 8 am to 4 pm
St. Petersburg College
Seminole Campus 9200 113 Street North (UP-303) Seminole, FL

Partners in the training program include:  St. Petersburg Fire Department

With the help of her efforts, the Board of Trustees was formed with prestigious and successful individuals interested in Suicide Prevention. She raised significant amounts of money each year to help get the organization going and continues to this day to support it’s wonderful work. Although she is no longer the Executive Director, she supports FISP and conducts a support group of suicide survivors that meets on a weekly basis. She often speaks out through advocacy and letters to the editor to protest unfair actions and to support individuals who are being treated unfairly. She is also active in community organizations and causes.
